Hoi An is located 30km south of Danang City, and 60 kms northeast of Tam Ky. Hoi An used to be an international trade center by sea on the East-West area in the 16th and 17th centuries. It was the busiest trading port in Dang Trong region of Vietnam under the reign of King Nguyen as merchants from Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines, India, Malaysia, Portugal, Spain, Holland, U.K and France …often landed for exchanging, purchasing commodities. The trade sea port of Hoi An was an important gate for trading of silk, ceramics and pottery, aloe wood, swallow nests. The Japanese and Chinese traders built up trading streets, living with their own culture and custom. In the 17th century, there were streets called Japanese Street, Chinese Street, and a Dutch Trading Center. This is the time when Hoi An was brilliantly developed in terms of Oriental and Occidental trading, it was also the center for dissemination of Christianity and Buddhism.
